Volunteering

As an avid philanthropist,  Melissa Denzer has had over 13 years of experience volunteering in her community. Organizations range from the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and Habitat for Humanity, to student tutoring, volunteering at the Hospital, working with nonprofits in her undergraduate studies, and when racing for marathons. No matter what the task, however, Denzer makes helping others a priority in her life.

Melissa additionally obtained her certification in Fundraising and Philanthropy from the University of Iowa to cultivate her passion for serving others in her community. While at Iowa, she did this through her organizational involvement on campus which even gained her media attention. Denzer most notably was recognized for her participation in the University of Iowa's Dance Marathon, as both a cancer survivor, student volunteer, and leadership member over the course of several years of service.

In addition to Dance Marathon, Denzer participated in the leadership service program at U of I, Alternative Spring Break, which allows students to do service work over spring break rather than have a traditional break during the term. The program varies from year to year and is focused on social justice issues across the United States. Melissa focused on children's health in Memphis, Tennessee as well as housing and urban development in Milwaukee, Wisconsin during her time at Iowa after being selected for the program.

She currently continues similar services through her art programs and marathon races that she participates in for charity in addition to her work at her University in the fundraising sector within University Advancement.

In 2023, Melissa raised $3,000 for the Cancer Society and St. Jude organizations, for which she ran the Chicago Marathon and St. Jude Marathon in October and December of 2023 respectively.
